Cover IllustrationThe Alphabetic Labyrinth: The Letters in History by Johanna Drucker.
Johanna Drucker gives us a comprehensive history of the alphabet, or should I say alphabets. She tells us about everything from the history of type face, to groups using various alphabets to justify their existence as a nation. Drucker also examines the various ways individuals have interpreted the alphabet; as a divine gift from a higher being to a necessary creation of "civilized" governments. This book was a fantastic read, although some sections required more than one reading for complete comprehension. A very informative book.

Cover IllustrationCounterpunch: Making Type in the Sixteenth Century, Designing Typefaces Now by Fred Smeijers
Fred Smeijers reveals a whole new theory about how punchcutters operated in 'the lead age'. That this is of use to a modern, digital typeface-designer may surprise a lot of people, but if you read this book, you'll know it. Brilliantly illustrated by Fred himself, and the typeface used, the 'Renard', has all the potency to beat a lot of so called 'serious serifs'. Cover Illustration Designing Books: Practice and Theoryby Jost Hochuli & Robin Kinross
This book has three parts. In the first two, basic principles in the theory and practice of book design are discussed. The third part then shows how the ideas of the first and second parts have been applied in particular examples. 'Book design as a school of thought' was originally delivered (in German) as a lecture and published as a pamphlet, in 1991. This is its first publication in English. 'Designing books' was published as a separate booklet by Agfa (Wilmington, Mass.) in 1989, in German. Translation into several other languages followed, including an English edition (1990): all long out of print. The version published here has been revised and considerably augmented with new illustrations. The third part, 'Books designed by Jost Hochuli', is completely new. Here Robin Kinross comments on 27 of Hochuli's works. Both authors are internationally known, Kinross more as critic and historian, Hochuli above all as a practitioner. In this book they offer a serious introduction to book design, free of ideological dogma. Short and concise, it contains a rich, painstakingly selected fund of illustrations.

Cover Illustration The End of Print: The Graphic Design of David Carson by Lewis Blackwell & David Carson
If it weren't for the experimentations of David Carson, I would not be a graphic designer today. I'd probably be teaching painting somewhere hating life. The End of Print is a study in composition and type. Typography can be the most imaginative, illustrative aspect of a design, and Carson has brought this thinking to a generation of designers, myself included. People are starting to read again and he is one of the reasons, along with a hand ful of other designers who revolutionized the field in the late 80's and early 90's. Stale and stagnant is what design would be toda, I think that Carson is one of the pioneers of graphic design, and The End of Print should be used as an influence for anyone who considers graphic design as a career choice.

Cover Illustration The Letter Jesters: A Kids’ Guide to Letterforms by Cathryn Falwell
Letters are everywhere,'' begins this joyous first look at typography, in which two jesters and their little dog romp through a simple, but by no means simplistic, presentation of typefaces and their uses. Samples found in such varied places as on a popcorn container, a stop sign, and a circus poster lead into a broad range of faces, with more than 70 samples chosen for their wide use, historical significance, and intriguing names or appearances. A few succinct, well-chosen words elucidate such basics as the difference between light and bold faces, the origins of roman and italic letters, how type is measured, and serifs. A final sequence demonstrates how type can declare a mood or echo a subject. Whether juggling the letters that compose a word or sliding merrily down a giant italic ``A,'' Falwell's (We Have a Baby, 1993, etc.) three bell-capped impresarios, rendered in flat, bold colors, are graceful and marvelously expressive against the clean white ground. But the letters steal the show. This lucid, beautifully organized and designed book is a splendid introduction to an often overlooked art that is, indeed, everywhere.
